In the summer of 1971, a venerable and scholarly swami, Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, visited Gainesville and spoke to several hundred UF students on the Plaza of the Americas. He encouraged interested students to take up the practice of bhakti yoga by distributing karma-free food and congregationally chanting sacred mantras as a regular event on the Plaza. What he inspired forty years ago has continued without interruption and become a UF tradition.
